Get to know Dr Suraj Mehta (Osteopath)
Where did you study, and what did you do your Masters degree on?
I completed my Masters in Osteopathy at the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in London. My research focused on how a neuromuscular inhibition/ischaemic compression technique affected pain levels over a period of time. It is a technique I commonly use during my treatments for trigger points and muscular tender points.
What inspired you to get into Osteopathy?
From a young age, I have always been fascinated by mechanics; learning how and why things work the way they do. I also loved learning about how the body works and how intricately connected bodily systems are. Osteopathic philosophy and principles resonated with me and it sounded like the perfect blend of all the things I most enjoyed learning about. Being able to help people, as a result, has become the most rewarding thing about being an Osteopath.
What style of treatment do you use?
I treat using a combination of structural methods. I often use soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisations and manipulations, muscle energy techniques, dry needling, taping and exercises in my treatments.
What type of injuries do you like to treat?
I am a general osteopath and enjoy treating all manners of injuries. Whether it is a painful shoulder caused by a vigorous sport, neck pain, a knee or ankle sprain, arthritic pain and stiffness, back pain or sciatica. I particularly like helping people with their back pain issues such as symptomatic disc prolapses – these can be very painful and worrying to experience, especially if it is the first occasion. It is always a privilege to be able to reassure and help people through it.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I get the most satisfaction when my patients are able to participate in activities they love again without having to worry about pain or movement issues. I really enjoy meeting and getting to know my patients. Through my work as an osteopath, I have had the pleasure of meeting the most amazing people, each with their own unique stories.
Do you have any hobbies?
I love to cook (and eat)! In my free time, I’ll often be experimenting in the kitchen. When I get to combine cooking with another of my passions – travel – I’m often at my happiest. Two standout moments for me were when I learned how to make fresh pasta in Tuscany and traditional Neapolitan pizzas at the AVPN in Naples.
I am a tactile person, so I love making things with my hands. I enjoy doing DIY jobs around the house, art and pottery (which I have only recently taken up).
I also enjoy keeping fit and active by going to the gym, cycling, swimming and going on long walks with my wife and dog.
Why did you choose the Sunshine Coast?
I moved to the Sunshine Coast, as it is where my wife grew up. I have previously visited the Coast a number of times and fell in love with it more and more with each trip. Having spent my life living in London, it was a welcome change when it comes to the pace of life, its beautiful natural surrounds and the friendly people!
